Israeli Military Intelligence Chief: Fired or Resigned?

The official story out of Tel Aviv is that Maj-Gen. Aharon Haliva, chief of the Israel Defense Force’s Military Intelligence Directorate, will step down once a replacement is appointed. ‘Alongside Haliva, other top defense officials have said they bear responsibility for the deadly invasion carried out by Hamas on October 7, including the head of the Shin Bet security agency and the IDF chief of staff. None of them has announced plans to resign as of yet, though many are expected to do so once the security situation stabilizes…

Tel Aviv is not halva on Haliva

However, an Iranian source close to Tehran’s security services said that Haliva’s resignation (or removal) was due to Haliva’s ‘wrong estimate of Iran’s response to the Damascus attack.’ This is plausible because the announcement of Haliva’s exit was made on 22 April 2024, more than six months after 7 October; and other defense officials are ‘expected’ to resign ‘once the security situation stabilizes’ (see above). Why did he resign if the security situation is still unstable?

It is evident that Israel failed to anticipate Iran’s response to Israel’s violation of international law by striking a sacrosanct diplomatic facility; but also failed to grasp IRGC’s ballistic missile capabilities. As an unnamed Israeli source said to a Gulf Arab newspaper, ‘we focused on Iran’s nuclear program but not its missiles.’
