Iran’s new ‘Azarakhsh’ Air Defense System

Azarakhsh SHORAD

This is a short-range, high-altitude, all-weather system; and a fully mobile tactical system that combines the launcher, detection, and interception system in one vehicle.

It carries four Azarakhsh surface-to-air missiles. Each SAM has 10 km range and is equipped with a thermal imaging probe to guide the missile. Thermal imaging allows the short-range air defense system (SHORAD) to operate in different weather conditions.

The detection and tracking system includes radar with range of 50 km; and optical system consisting of thermal imaging sensor and television sensor. Both cover a radius of 25 km. Its  ‘Electro-Optical and Infrared Sensors’ (EO/IR array) are allegedly capable of jamming GPS, radio communications, and cell phone signals; and possibly including signals from low orbit and AWACS aircraft.

This SHORAD model is believed to have been manufactured for export.
