Russia-Iran Military Exchanges: Part 4

5 August 2024 update to original post of 4 August 2024: Added video of Sergei Shoigu in Tehran on 5 Aug 24. He is former Defense Minister and current Secretary of the Security Council of Russia.

Russian heavy cargo transports are ferrying equipment to Iran. Precise contents unknown (of course) but Russian electronic warfare equipment was just spotted deployed inside Iran. What else is Moscow doing for, or sending to, Tehran?

Background

As stated here, here, and here, Russia and Iran have been militarily assisting each other. Iran came to Russia’s aid at the beginning of the Ukraine War by supplying it with drones and other equipment, including ballistic missiles. Russia is paying Iran back for its support. Moreover, a Russian proxy war in the Middle East is not unexpected. A Russian insider, Elena Panina: “The best option for Russia is to respond to America in a similar way: with a hybrid war far from its own borders.  The most obvious at the moment is a proxy attack on American forces in the Middle East” (ibid.). Putin said the same in May. Sergei Lavrov said Russia will not be a “mere spectator” should the Middle East conflict escalate into a full-scale war. Finally, as I wrote at a journal:

The US security apparatus warring against Russia and supporting Israel is top-heavy with Zionists/neo-cons. Iran’s enemies and Israel’s enemies are nearly congruent: Victoria Kagan née Nuland; Kagan family (Robert, Fred, Kim, their ISW); Antony Blinken (grandson of a founder of Israel); Avril Haines (Director of National Intelligence); deputy director CIA David Cohen, Alejandro Mayorkas (Secretary of DHS), and more. It behooves Russia to punish its tormentors by damaging the only country to which they are loyal: Israel.

What We Know

We know little. Russia and Iran, however, are not hiding the fact that Russian transports are ferrying equipment to Tehran. Apart from the IL-76 flights of recent days, Antonov AN-124 cargo aircraft—the heaviest airlifter in the world—has been spotted at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport several times in the past months. The Russian military airbase in Syria has been open to Iranian air traffic since at least late last year, which gives IRGC concealment from Israeli intelligence and immunity from IDF airstrikes. We know only that Russian electronic warfare equipment has been deployed in Iran. These systems, tested against US/NATO equipment in Ukraine, will interfere with US/Israeli cruise missiles. Other deliveries, such as advanced air defense systems (S-400, S-500), are possible but unconfirmed.
